Silage Film –

Best Practices for Optimal
Preservation in bunker silos

How to cover clamp web
1

Prepare a Clean Foundation

  • Start with a completely clean concrete surface.
  • Dirt or contamination will compromise silage quality from day one.
2

Compact Thoroughly

  • Proper compaction is the most crucial step during filling of the clamp.
  • Apply silage in the thinnest possible layers to achieve maximum density.
3

Build the Clamp Correctly

  • Fill in thin, even layers, slightly higher at the sides for optimal
    wall compression.
  • Once above wall height, create a gentle slope toward the centre for
    effective water drainage.
  • Keep the surface smooth to prevent water pockets forming on the film.
4

Secure the Critical Edges

  • The open film edges are the most vulnerable to oxygen ingress.
  • Place two tightly positioned rows of sandbags above the concrete wall in
    a locked pattern.
  • Cover the front and rear of the clamp in the same protective manner.
5

Avoid Using Tires

  • Tires heat up and transfer heat through the film layers.
  • Worn tires may expose metal parts that can damage the film.
  • Use gravel-filled sandbags instead, arranged in a square pattern.
  • Prevent water accumulation between the squares to avoid UV damage.
6

Do Not Use Sand as Cover

  • Wet sand becomes extremely heavy and may slide down,
    pulling the film with it.
  • This significantly increases the risk of film tearing.
7

UV Stability

  • Our silage films are UV-stable for 12 months under Central European
conditions. Please consult the factory for high UV locations.
  • Water ponds on the film reduce UV lifespan and should be avoided.
8

Shield Against Birds and Animals

  • Always use a protective net to prevent damage from birds, animals, or hail.
  • Even small holes can negatively impact silage quality.
9

Avoid Overlapping Films

  • Overlaps create weak points where oxygen can enter.
  • Choose jumbo reels (300, 400, or 500 m) to prevent the need for
    overlapping.
10

Keep Chemicals Away

  • Fertilizers and pesticides can degrade the film.
  • Spraying weeds near the clamp may cause chemical drift onto the film.
11

Keep the Reel Label

  • Store the reel label for at least one year for traceability in case of issues.
12

Store Reels Properly

  • Keep reels indoors in their original packaging.
  • After partial use, rewrap leftovers to prevent UV exposure—especially the reel sides.
13

100% Recyclable

  • Our films are produced from LDPE and are fully recyclable.

Covering concrete bunker silos

How to cover clamp
1

Install a RaniSidewall film twice the height of the concrete wall

2

Install RaniCover the full width of the clamp

3

Fold the RaniSidewall on top of the RaniCover

4

Install a Silage film like RaniBel or RaniSilo on top of the RaniSidewall/RaniCover!

With our oxygen barrier sheet RaniSilO2 there is no need for the RaniCover!

5

Install a protective net on top of the silage cover to protect the sheet against animal damage

6

Weights are required on top of the protective net. Rani recommends the use of sandbags. Place these sandbags as seen in the picture
